This map is from the 1932 Atlas of the Historical Geography of the United States. The original introductory material to this map stated:
This is the first major historical atlas of the United States and probably the most comprehensive work of its kind that has yet been published for any country. Its aim is to illustrate cartographically, in manageable compass, and yet with considerable detail, essential facts of geography and of history that condition and explain the development of the United States.
You can read more about the atlas here.
This map today is housed by the University of Richmond. This is a screen shot, but the site is interactive. Just follow this link.
It’s interesting to compare this map from the 1650s with the map of Native Languages Before Colonialism.
Hat tip to Elaine for sending the link.
