For white people to qualify for citizenship, they had to have been married into the tribe prior to 1877 although other white people appeared on the 1896 Cherokee Census Roll as intermarried at that time.

How do I find out if my family name is on the Indian registry? My parents on my mother and father’s side were of Indian decent. Their last names were Lincoln/mother, Farrow/father. My father’s mother was full Indian.

I found a great great grandmother On an 1880 Census in wright Missouri She is marked with an I and it says ( part Indian) in the box next to her name in this census, on this particular census she is living in the next house over to one of her daughters who is marked white and a few houses down from another one of her daughters also marked white on all other census before this one the whole family was marked white. I also can not find a maiden name for this women would she have been written down anywhere else if she had been marked on that census? I am going crazy trying to find her!

My mom was adopted and so she did not know her maternal parents she is clearly Indian in her blood.i don’t want her to live without her heritage . Can give suggestions us suggestions in what we should do

I need your help! You wrote an article about the name George Martin Buzzard Flopper. My grandfather said his father was Cherokee, name was George Martin. My grandfather had to have a birth certificate made in 1924 when he immigrated from Oklahoma to California. He said his birth place was Brooken, Oklahoma, which is where he was raised, and is Choctaw nation. I have searched Indian rolls, white settler roles (his mother was white), regular census records, etc., and have found nothing regarding my grandfathers birth, which was 2/14/1880. This is why I think that he had to have his birth certificate created. Because of your article a number of people who are trying to research on the Martin family along with his mothers family, the Sorrels/Sorrells, they have latched on to your article as the resource for saying that my grandfather was the son of George Martin Buzzard Flopper. Do you have documents/records that corroborate who George Martin’s children were and IF he was married to Patience Janettie Sorrells/Sorrels? You say that Buzzard Flopper died in 1880, but grandfather swore to all of us that he saw his father when he was 7. He said that he never knew his father until then, and had been told that he abandoned his family. He never saw his father again. When my grandfather was 3 his mother remarried L.D. Martindale, who did have Choctaw heritage. Can you help me? Just need to know what else you know about this Buzzard Flopper so I can alert others about our family tree. I might also add that I have been DNA tested and there is no Native American connection according to the testing. Only Northern European and British Isles connections.
